Hunting and Fishing Flashbacks

I was browsing through PPP opportunities today and this site featuring hunting equipment and deer feeders caught my attention.

I come from a family of hunters – on both sides – and was quite the shot myself growing up. πŸ˜‰ (I’ll have to get some old photos from my parents to scan and share! πŸ™‚ ) The hunting and fishing in the wilds of Alaska are what first drew my parents here and there was hardly a youngster of my generation that I knew who didn’t grow up tramping through the woods gun over their arm or a have a line in some river or who’s family (or someone closely related) didn’t have a commercial fishing boat (big or small). I spent many an hour on the famous Kenai River and even caught quite a lunker of a King salmon when I was 7yo! Bigger than me in length and pounds! (Have to check with my Dad on the exact stats. πŸ˜‰ ) Many Red salmon tired my arms too. πŸ˜‰

So, hunting and fishing “stuff” interests me. Being in the business I’m in with dh makes it even more so – gotta have antler – beg, borrow or steal. πŸ˜‰ OK – NOT steal…but you catch my drift I hope! πŸ˜€ While it’s been a few years since me or dh have been on a hunting trip, we are encouraging the children to go out with Grandpa. (Actually, I take that back! I took a couple of my children rabbit hunting earlier this year on a trip to my parents! We didn’t go out long and didn’t get anything so that’s probably why I forgot. But I shouldn’t have – my children were so excited that MOM took them hunting! LOL ) My parents too have a great camp on the Kenai River so the children have experienced that awesome Red fishing as well although we haven’t done as much of it as we’d like since our business has kept us so busy these last few years in the summer. Anyhow, back from my tangent…tramping through the woods in search of the elusive Bull is a great time to keep your eyes peeled for old dropped antlers!

My Dad and oldest dd

All that to say that company’s link peaked my interest and I was curious to see what they carried so I popped in for a spell. It sparked some nostalgic thought and so here I am telling you about it! LOL

Did you grow up in a hunting and fishing family? Share some of your favorite memories! πŸ™‚

Ergo Love and Blueberry Heaven

I can’t wait to be doing this again…

and this…

and this…

The berry picking will, of course, have to wait a few more months but hiking starts just as soon as we can catch a break! We’re finishing up a big order this weekend…so, soon…very soon. Hopefully, in the next couple of days. I so love being in the mountains and woods with my family! πŸ™‚

And, yes, that’s an Ergo Baby Carrier! Like so many others, I LOVE MY ERGO! Save your pennies, spring for one. You won’t be disappointed! πŸ˜€

Blessings,

Celebrations

4/09 Baby L.’s 1rst Birthday!!! πŸ˜€
Where did this past year go???? I’m flabbergasted…just flabbergasted. She’s so sweet and every one of us loves her so much! Seven children is not too many…it’s just not. I can’t imagine not having her in our family. To have stopped at four, like we in our naiveté originally talked of, it just wouldn’t have been right. I had always wanted a large family but my dh had never really given it much thought so we came to a compromise…both hesitatingly though as that didn’t seem quite right. I’m oh so thankful for what we learned together and for these three more children (so far)!

Chickens

4/15 1 (L) Yay!! I’m flabbergasted. What is it – a Tax Day gift??? πŸ™„

4/18 1 (L) Guess I was right about them laying in a couple of weeks after I butchered Fluff.

Total = 2 *whoopee* (Tongue firmly in cheek.)

Children

4/15 L.’s 4th tooth! Right front incisor.

4/29 L.’s 5th tooth! Left upper lateral incisor.

Exercise

I have decided not to put my workouts in my updates here but have revived my workout blog. Link is to the right.

Recreation

4/23 G & G Baker arrived in the evening to celebrate the two birthdays we had this month. They stayed until the 25th.

Travel

4/13 & 14 W. left w/ all the childen (except baby) about 4:15pm to go to Seward. I was abondoned stayed at home to work on tax stuff. πŸ˜› They played around “the property” for a few hours then drove to Soldotna to visit/stay the night w/ my parents and were there for the next couple of days as well. They got back around 4pm on the 15th.

Weather

4/02 60°F Really, no kidding…April Fool’s Day was yesterday. πŸ˜‰ It didn’t last though. Mid-afternoon the temp dropped to the hi 40s.

4/05 – 06 Snow = 10″

4/09 Snow = 6″

4/15 Snow = 2″

4/21 64 ° F in the sun!! *whoop* πŸ˜€

4/23 64 ° F in the sun!! The children were so excited they couldn’t resist setting up the kiddy pool and getting in! What could I do except say, “Go for it!” πŸ˜‰

4/25 Snow = 16 ½ ” !! **aacckk** Weren’t the children just swimming a couple of days ago??!!

4/26 Snow = &#189″

Total Snow = 35″ Nearly a whole yard this month…3 ft…just before spring. *sigh*

Wildlife

We caught some photos of a wascally backyard visitor!

Until next time,

Chickens
3/12 Whadaya know…an egg! 1 (L) Guess I was right with my prediction when I butchered Fluff – that they were a couple weeks away from starting up again. More guilt…if I hadn’t killed her we would have had that many more eggs. But, no, because she was faster than we were in getting to them although they are right in the garage and we are out there the split second their “boasting calls” are made. Daughter B. even said that she knew one of the other hens was going to lay and she stayed there to watch and make sure she got the egg first but Fluff just hung around the back end of the other chicken waiting and waiting too. If she hadn’t been there, it would have been pounced on. So, yes, I’ll quit beating myself up. Great farmer I’d make huh?! πŸ˜‰ Raised killing meat for the family and yet one itty-bitty chicken made me feel remorseful. *sheesh*

3/14 1 (L)

3/16 1 (L)

3/21 1 (L)

Total egg count = 4 πŸ˜›

Children
3/03 Baby L.’s third tooth is finally in! (Right top lateral incisor.)

When P. is playing Peekaboo with L., she says, “Where is you?” instead of “Where is Leah?” So cute! ♥ ♥ They make me melt! πŸ™‚

Celebrations
3/23 Resurrection Sunday – spent with church family!

3/26 Q.’s 5th Birthday! We love ya guy! Thanks for the great hugs! I thank God for you every day!

I can’t believe it…I really can’t. My baby Q. has definitely moved out of his baby/toddler stage and it staggers me how fast my family is growing up. πŸ˜•

Exercise
I am so pathetically out of shape. (Hard to believe I was a dancer for ½ my life. πŸ˜› ) Exercise has come in fits and starts around here. I really must do better. I haven’t felt as well after L.’s birth this past year…just in general, nothing specific that I can put my finger on really. Mostly age I suppose…although, I know there are many women older than I in much better shape. I really need to track what I do and have some accountability so here goes (starting from scratch once again):

3/31 50 crunches, 50 reverse crunches, various stretching

I’m thinking of transferring all my previous posts from my workout blog over here too as maintaining more than one blog is difficult during this stage of life. I’d update my stats in the sidebar too but I don’t have a scale. Just go by how my clothes fit…

Recreation
3/16 First “rock climbing” of the year at our favorite spot around the Arm!

Weather
3/04 42°F! Another unusually warm day…feels so nice. πŸ™‚ There was some wind and clouds with occasional flakes but it was nice for the children to have some warmer temps outside.

3/05 Temp dropped again to 33°F. Snowed 3″. Then, went up to 36°F and got windy. Preparing for a Chinook maybe?

3/06 Wow! 56°F and sun!! I know it won’t last of course but I’m definitely enjoying it! πŸ˜€

3/07 Fun while it lasted… Back down to 32°F and snow. 4 ” to be exact. πŸ˜› Granted, it’s not really piling up with the melting spurts we’ve had.

3/10 46°F It’s nice again…but I’m actually getting tired of the yo-yoing temps.

3/11 Snow (just a dusting).

3/12 Snow 2″.

3/17 47°F

3/25 53°F

3/26 48°F I know this is just the lull before the storm… It always dumps on us in April. *sigh*

3/27 46°F

Total snow = 9″ (+ a little)

Wildlife
3/16 Saw our neighborhood coyote in the early evening!

Chickens

The Ladies still aren’t laying. 😦 Guess you could say they are officially “old” now…

Children

10/01/07 L. crawled today! Actual hands and knees crawling! Not just scooting w/ her arms and one knee. Wow! Not quite 6mo. (Yup, seven children and I still get thrilled when each one of them reaches their first in each milestone. πŸ™‚ )

10/03/07 L.’s first night in her crib! She woke once and I brought her to bed with me to nurse her. She slept for another couple of hours with us and I nursed her again then managed to put her back in her crib without waking her because I knew I’d be getting up soon. She woke again 2-3 hrs later. She did well for her first night I think. πŸ™‚

10/09/07 Baby L. is 6 months today! πŸ™‚

10/22/07 L.’s first tooth is finally finally finally in!! She’s been our hardest teether of ALL the children… *ugh* :-/ I’m sure she’s been teething (off and on) since she was about 2mo old and it’s been rough during the “on” times. Anyhow, it’s just barely poking through and I noticed it in the wee hours of the morning during our nursing session. I realized she was nursing better so ran my finger along her gum and felt it’s sharp little tip and sure enough later in the morning when it was light there it was! Bottom right incisor.

Recreation & Travel

10/09/07 Dh and children went to Seward again today (except C. & L.) I stayed home to get some housework and projects done without interuption and C. stayed with me to help with the baby. I got a lot done and also was able to squeeze in some nice (semi) one-on-one time with C. πŸ™‚

10/22/07 It was good talking to you on the phone again Rebekah!! An hour sure flies by… (This could be categorized under General but I’ll go ahead and put it here as it was a nice little break from my normal day. πŸ˜‰ )

10/27/07 Wow, another nice little break in my “normal” day…Valerie called me and we talked for 3 hrs or so! Who wudda thought you could talk to someone on the phone for so long who you’d never “met” before?! LOL And, I’m NOT a phone person. In fact, I could do quite nicely without one. But, I’m so glad she called and we had that time to visit. (My dh generously allowed me that time by taking over child care for a while. πŸ™‚ ) She’s wonderfully personable and I feel a definite kinship despite having met her over the Internet. ♥ Thanks Valerie for being a great friend! ♥

Weather

10/03/07 First frost at our house!

10/07/07 First snow at our house! (Very early this morning. Not enough to actually measure though.)

10/19 – 20/07 Snow 1 ½ ”

10/23/07 Snow ¼ ”

10/24/07 Snow ½ ”

10/26/07 54 ° F in the sun on the deck in the afternoon! One last “hurrah” before winter hits in earnest. πŸ˜‰

Total Snow = 2 ¼ “

I don’t have a category set up for extended family type stuff so this will be the “general” part of this post:

10/03/07 My father and his sister left in the wee hours of the morning for an emergency trip to see their mother. She’s apparently had some sort of an attack and is in the hospital. This is strange for me as it is my last living grandparent and, while we haven’t had close contact over the years because of the thousands of miles between us, it saddens me terribly. All of my dh’s grandparents are deceased now and I’m just feeling a general sense of mourning for the generation that we all are losing. My grandmother comes from a large family and a few of her older sisters lived well into their 90’s so I’m hoping she’ll follow in that direction…

That wraps up another month in the life of the Hunt Family!

‘Til next time…
Blessings,
~Tamara

Business

The market is over on the 9th. Please pray that our home business will sustain us through the winter/tourist season slump!

Celebrations

9/08/07 C.’s 9th bday! Happy birthday to our sweet third daughter! Your cheerful smile and enthusiastic bear hugs make our days much brighter! You are growing so fast into a graceful lovely girl and following your older sisters in becoming such a wonderful helper! We’re so thankful to have you in our family!

9/25/07 B.’s 11th bday! Happy birthday our dear dear daughter! You challenge us at times with your feistiness and stubbornness but when it comes right down to it, you have a caring, loving and protective spirit for your family. We wouldn’t change the precious package you are for the world. We love you to pieces Nanna! πŸ˜€

Chickens

The ladies are still on sabbatical. πŸ˜›

Children

9/01/07 L. is beginning to move one knee forward while on hands and knees! Also, nearly sitting completely on her own! She can push herself up to sitting and will use one hand but hasn’t quite been “brave” enough to lift the other one yet and play with two hands. Close though…real close.

9/02/07 P. has gone a week without wearing a diaper at night! Of course, I’ve been diligent about getting up in the wee hours (2-3am) to take her to the bathroom to make sure she doesn’t have an accident. I’ll keep it up about another week and then try letting her sleep to see if she’ll then wake on her own. The girls’ room gets some light at night from the neighbor’s yard light and the bathroom is right next to their room with a good night light…so, we’ll see if she calls to me or just goes to the bathroom on her own.

L. is solidly on her hands and knees now and definitely scootching herself forward a bit at a time with one knee (always the same one LOL).

9/03/07 L. has discovered her tongue and loves making this “tthbbb” sort of noise. Sometimes it’s a “raspberry”…but sometimes it’s not. πŸ˜› LOL

9/04/07 L. is “military” crawling today! Sorta…she still hikes that one knee up occasionally (the right one).

9/05/07 L.’s first solid food today! (Four days from her 5mo bday.) Following NT suggestion, I gave her a small amount of smashed egg yolk. It was weird for me seeings how I’ve been trained to think that babies *should not* get egg before their 1rst bday…but we’ll see. (I understand the it’s the whites that mostly cause trouble.)

9/08/07 C.’s 9th bday!! ~*~Happy Birthday Sweet Girl!~*~ We love you bunches! πŸ™‚

9/09/07 L. is 5mo today – almost ½ a year already! 😯

9/11/07 L. gets up on her hands and feet now like she’s going to do the “bear” walk!

9/13/07 G. Hunt took everyone to lunch for their bdays and then we went bday gift shopping – fun!

9/25/07 B.’s 11th bday! ~*~Happy Bday Lovely B.!~*~ Love you! G & G B. arrived yesterday to celebrate with us and will go home tomorrow.

Exercise

9/03/07 I decided over the weekend that I was feeling healed enough to start “formal” exercising again. The PSD has increasingly gotten worse and this time is definitely not clearing up as fast postpartum. But, like I said, I noticed that I’ve been feeling pretty well recently and decided to get on the treadmill today. Here are the stats:

– Cal.: 289
– Fat Cal.: 90
– Incline: 3
– Time: 45min
– Dist.: 2.16 miles
– Laps: 8.6
– Speed: 3 average, 3.7 highest

Harvesting

9/22/07 40 lbs apples! (apprx) (See below under Recreation)

Homemaking

9/28/07 9 ½ pints of Mint Apple Syrup canned!

Recreation & Travel

9/17/07 Day trip to Whittier today! Got to go through (2.5 miles) the train tunnel! Very interesting and fun! Stats about the tunnel:

* Longest highway tunnel in North America (13,300′ or 2.5 miles).
* Longest combined rail and highway use tunnel in North America.
* First U.S. tunnel with jet turbine and portal fan ventilation.
* First computerized regulation of both rail and highway traffic.
* First tunnel designed for -40° F. and 150 mph winds.
* Portal buildings designed to withstand avalanches

Entrance to the Tunnel.

In the Tunnel.

Our playground for the day! (This pic is too small but two of our children are in it…mere specs in this majestic scenery!)

9/19/07 Day trip Glenallen/Kenny Lake area today – where dh grew up. In fact, we stopped at his old house, saw it was for sale so stopped in and looked around/took pictures. So cool for the children to see where Daddy grew up! We’ve been out there before but the older girls were really little and don’t remember. Plus, the house isn’t in the family any more so they only had a glimpse of it from the road. This time they got to wander around AND dh old tree fort (pretty elaborate) was still partially standing! Pretty neato! πŸ™‚

Daddy with all his children at his childhood home! Oh the memories of hauling water and firewood and using this…

It still has his name graffitied above the can that held the toilet paper!

The view dh grew up seeing! (Minus the satellite dish – that’s the current owners.)

9/22/07 Day trip to Seward. (Dh also lived here – from the time he was 14yo through high school.) Picked apples at a small orchard just down the road from our house before heading out though for the first time! Been passing it for years and always said we should stop in there “this year” but wouldn’t and then would say “next year.” LOL This year the sign said FREE and there was no way I was going to let dh keep driving! Got about 40 lbs! We had a lot of high winds and cold weather this year so the apples were small and there were a lot of windfalls so the owner just decided to open it up to everyone (rather than charging) so they wouldn’t go to waste. Even allowed everyone to pick off the trees so we got a good variety. Delicious! I’m going to be busy canning or drying or something! LOL Anyway, a little late heading out to Seward but at least we didn’t pass it up this year! In Seward, we mostly enjoyed exploring and playing at the old “homestead” (dh’s deceased grandparents 30 acres that now belongs to his mother/uncles with one uncle still living there). It’s on the bay and boy was the smell awful because the tide was out (spawned salmon)! But, the children went out on the beach anyway. When the tide came up, the smell was nice and fresh and salty again. πŸ™‚ We had a bonfire with the uncle and roasted hot dogs, etc. Been a long time since I’ve had a s’more! πŸ˜‰ Great fun and came home pleasantly tired. πŸ™‚

9/29/07 Bonfire at our friends the Mischenkos! Had a great time Grace – thanks for inviting us! πŸ™‚

Wildlife

9/02/07 Saw our third flock of geese flying south today (over the house). Yesterday some did too but the flock wasn’t as big. Last Wed., we saw our first one while at the store. That flock was big and flying high and fast. *sigh* It seems a little early to me…I’m not ready for Fall/Winter/cold weather. 😦

‘Til next time – Blessings,
~Tamara

Business

This month we were still busily making knives, knives and more knives! Dh is still helping at the Downtown Market also setting up and tearing down on the weekends. The market will be over next month though and things will be slowing down business-wise with all that involves. We have some other plans in the works though so hopefully business won’t slow down completely. Pray for us! πŸ™‚

Celebrations

8/28/07 DH’s bday!

Chickens

Zip, zilch, nada. 😦 The ladies took a 3 month break last year about this time too. Guess this will be their regular thing from now on…? They are 3 yrs old as of this past spring. Standard culling time from what I’ve read. We’ll wait to see what happens…if it extends a lot longer or egg production is dreadfully low (which I haven’t determined yet *exactly* what *that* would be πŸ™„ ) then it might be time for the soup pot. Notice my hesitation. We have become quite fond of them. πŸ˜‰

Children

8/3/07 Baby L. props herself while sitting! It’s for the briefest of seconds…maybe two or three…but she’s doing it! And, not quite 4 months old yet! 6 more days…

8/9/07 Baby L. has been working desperately all week to get up on her hands and knees. She’s still wobbly but she’s pretty near to accomplishing it! 4 months old today! None of our other children have been in this much of a hurry to get around! She rolls and pushes with her feet and makes herself mobile already.

8/10/07 Baby L. hardly slept today…2 short catnaps…and has been very active. She is “bicycling”, pushing up with her legs to stand, scootching (trying to do the “military” crawl), laughing/giggling, etc. Just like a little wind up toy that’s stuck today! LOL She getting older fast and we’ll be going through a sleeping pattern adjustment for a bit I think. πŸ˜‰

8/25/07 It’s been three weeks but I think Baby L. finally has it. She sits propped up with her hands pretty well now. Still a little tippy…forgets herself and grabs for a toy, etc. and topples over…but will sit pretty solidly otherwise. πŸ™‚

Recreation, Wildcrafting, Wildlife

8/28/07 Went for an approx. 3 hr hike today at a new place down around the Arm. Picked 1 ¼ gallons of serviceberries!! I (nor dh) hadn’t picked these before and I had to do a bit of research to discover what they were but they are good! A little sweeter than blueberries but they still make those lovely purple lips and tongues just like blueberries! LOL

8/29/07 Hiked at the same place again today and picked another 1 gallon of serviceberries!! Looking forward to actually processing some jelly or something this year! Oh, and since we were up the mountain a bit, we had a wonderful view of a large pod of Beluga whales!! So cool watching them roll and their tails come up out of the water and we caught a spray or two as well!

That’s it in a nutshell for this month. Until next time… πŸ™‚
